Soccer referees issue yellow and red cards to punish inappropriate behavior on the field. Strengths-Based Coaches take the opposite approach, issuing green cards to positively encourage children involved in youth sports.
Here’s how the Green Card program works:
- The coach purchases a pack of Green Cards

- During a practice or game, coaches present players with Green Cards
when they see them doing something positive - The coach publicly praises the player for his or her positive behavior as
the green card is being given - Play continues
- The coach collects all green cards at the end of the practice or game
Player Compliment Tool:
Immediately after a practice or game, coaches are encouraged to log their Player Compliments into a database. This serves a dual purpose:
1. A copy of the Player Compliment is sent to the player
2. Compliments are archived for research purposes
+ View the Player Compliment application (you must be logged into the member section to view this tool).
Positive Coaching Stories:
Coaches are encouraged to share their Positive Coaching Stories online. All stories will be reviewed and considered for inclusion in a future Strengths-Based Coaching publication.
